Snowy McFlakes

I like crafts. There you go. I'm a big, fat, bald guy with tattoos and I like crafts. Mostly, I like the idea that you can take a bunch of nothing and turn it into something beautiful, if only for a moment. I see origami as a form of magic. A fold here, a twist there... voila! A polar bear. There's something enchanting about taking a gum wrapper and turning it into a frog or a swan or a silly little hat that fits on your thumb. Then you draw a face on your thumb and make it go around eating everyone else's thumbs. (Is that how you pluralize and possessify "else"? Not really concerned, to be honest.)

Note: I've never done the thumb thing. I'm annoying enough in person as it is.

Lately I've been having a lot of fun with paper snowflakes. A friend showed me a simple way to fold the paper so that every snip of the shears results in hexagonal beauty. For example:

My wife did this one. It's the only one of hers that I've seen and it's the best of the lot.

Here are a few of mine. And keep in mind, I have a shaky and impatient hand. The fact that these aren't spattered with blood from a severed finger is, in itself, impressive.

This last one was inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas. You know that scene where Jack is trying to figure out Christmas and everything he tries comes out all weird and Tim Burton-y? Yeah. Mine just sort of looks like a Halloween party decoration from the dollar store.

Thank you,
Matt Beers
