The boy, the bow, and the bike.

Jack is kind of stubborn. If there's something he doesn't want to do, he won't do it. For example, he'll be six in a week or so and the kid refuses to learn how to tie his shoes. His excuse is that, since his dad wears slip-on shoes, he should be able to wear slip-on shoes. What he doesn't understand is that I wear slip-on shoes because I'm fat and if I have to bend over to tie my shoes, I get all out of breath and dizzy and there's a good chance that I won't be standing up again without help from an EMT.

We've made a deal with him. As soon as he can put on both shoes and tie them himself, he can go get a new bike. He wants a new bike. He needs a new bike. He has proven that it is well within his ability to tie a shoe. He understands that if he puts on his shoes and ties them we will walk straight out to the garage, get into the van and spend more money than we should on a brand-new bicycle. He's currently in the front room making spaceship noises, so I can only assume he is pretending that the plastic corn-on-the-cob from the play kitchen is actually a rocket-ship from some alien planet and only Optimus Prime or Anakin Skywalker or Harry Potter can save the earth from total and complete destruction. The bike can wait.

Thank you,
Matt Beers
